Bush-Lodge Living in Johannesburg
Long-term furnished homes with a bush-lodge feel, in the heart of Johannesburg's northern suburbs.
Life at Idwala
Idwala is a small eco estate in Darrenwood, in the residential northern suburbs of Johannesburg. Four private units sit inside a lush indigenous garden on what was once one of the city's earliest farms. The estate runs on solar power and borehole water backup, and takes composting, recycling, and low-impact living seriously. It is not a large development. It was never meant to be.
This is not a hotel. There is no front desk, no room service, and no need for either. What is included: housekeeping, fibre Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen, secure parking, security and armed response, garden service, and recycling collection. The people who live here tend to stay for a year. Some stay considerably longer.
Darrenwood borders Linden directly. Award-winning restaurants, coffee shops, a farmers market, yoga studios, and boutique retailers are all within easy walking distance. Cresta Shopping Centre is exactly one kilometre away. Sandton is about twenty minutes on a clear run. The practical side of a professional life is well taken care of, and the estate itself provides what most of Johannesburg cannot: real quiet.
Who lives here
The people who are happiest at Idwala tend to value having their own space and their own routine. Most are professionals or executives, some are between assignments or relocating to Johannesburg, and a few are remote workers who need somewhere genuinely calm to do their best thinking. They appreciate a natural setting and they are comfortable in one.
This is a bush-lodge feel in a residential suburb. The garden is indigenous, the bird life is remarkable, and the environment is a natural one. If that is the kind of place you have been looking for, you will know it immediately.
What our residents say ...
I have lived at Idwala for over a year. The setting, the quiet - I really miss it. It was a very different experience from any other place I have rented in Johannesburg
Carl F.
Moving to Johannesburg from overseas, I needed somewhere that felt settled and considered rather than temporary. Idwala was that from the first week. I have extended my stay twice.
Warren Y.
We have placed several executives here over the years. It is the kind of property where people actually want to stay on, which says everything.
Antoinette, HR business partner
The most peaceful environment to unwind after work and on the weekends. Feels like I am in the bush yet I'm still in the middle of Johannesburg
