Idwala generates its own power and draws its own water.
This isn't a backup that switches on when the lights go out - it's the system you live on every day.
In practice that means load-shedding and municipal water interruptions mostly pass you by. There's no inverter to charge, no generator to fuel, no water tanker to arrange, and no schedule to check before you run a bath or start cooking.
Being off-grid does ask a little in return. The system is sized for normal household use rather than running everything at once, and after several consecutive overcast days the batteries can run low in the evening. It's uncommon, and we manage it, but we'd rather say so upfront than have you discover it in your first winter.
Residents who use energy thoughtfully rarely notice the difference.

Darrenwood, Randburg
A quiet, established, boomed residential suburb in north-west Johannesburg - leafy, low-traffic and genuinely peaceful, which is rarer inside the city than it should be. The neighbourhood has an active community and a long-standing security service.
Cresta Shopping Centre is a kilometre away - walkable, and everything from groceries to a cinema. Sandton, Rosebank and the Randburg business district are all a straightforward drive, and both airports, OR Tambo and Lanseria, are around 35 minutes.
WHO LIVES HERE
The people who are happiest here tend to value having their own space and their own routine.
Most are professionals or executives; some are between assignments or relocating to Johannesburg; a few are remote workers who need somewhere genuinely calm to think.
This is a bush-lodge feel in a residential suburb. The garden is indigenous, the birdlife is remarkable, and the setting is a natural one. If that's the kind of place you've been looking for, you'll know it immediately.
Idwala is four cottages on one property, run by us rather than by an agency. We let directly, we screen every applicant ourselves, and we meet everyone in person before offering a lease. That's why the questions below are more detailed than you might expect - it's deliberate, and it's what keeps this place the way it is.
It also means there's nobody in between. No agency commission, no application fee, no letting agent's admin charge. If something breaks, you contact the owner.

Credit and reference checks are only carried out once your appliations considered, and only with your prior written consent. Unsuccessful applications are deleted after 90 days unless you ask us to keep you on our waiting list.
